About IPSA

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) is the new, independent organisation, created to bring a fresh approach to the system of paying MPs’ expenses.

IPSA has produced the new rules on expenses - removing allowances and establishing clear guidelines setting out what MPs can and cannot claim for. The rules, which apply to all MPs, are a break from what went before and are fair, workable and transparent.

Following the 2010 general election, IPSA has sole responsibility for processing, validating and paying or rejecting MPs’ claims for expenses. In the interests of transparency, IPSA will publish on its website every claim made by every MP.

IPSA has no axe to grind. We want to contribute to restoring the public’s confidence in Parliament, to make sure the taxpayer gets value for money from how MPs’ expenses are managed, and to enable MPs to do the work they were elected to do.

While it is the responsibility of each MP to submit expenses correctly, IPSA will be working to help MPs get it right. IPSA is running one-to-one induction sessions for MPs, talks about the new rules and half day training sessions for MPs’ staff.

IPSA is entirely independent of Parliament, Government and all political parties. In all it does, IPSA will keep at the front of its mind its main duty - to serve the interests of the public.”
