About Us
The Council for World Mission (CWM) is a partnership of 31 Christian churches in mission representing 13 million believers.
Although CWM is just over 30 years old it is built on a long history of mission. CWM arose out of the London Missionary Society in 1977. It owes a great deal to its forerunners in mission - David Livingstone, John Williams and Robert Moffat in particular, for bringing the word of God and Christianity to far reaching parts of the globe from as far back as 1795. The Council for World Mission was set up to embrace more churches across the globe and widen its scope for mission.
CWM's 31 member churches share their experience of mission through training, short-term exchanges and conferences. In partnership through CWM they also share financial resources and missionaries from one side of the globe to the other to carry out God's mission locally.
CWM believes that mission begins with God and that we are partners with God in mission. It believes that mission is a task of the whole church and not just of interested individuals and that to share in international mission, every church is both a receiver of help and a giver of its talents.
What does CWM stand for?
- Justice in relationships
- Mutuality, equality and interdependence
- Unity in diversity
- Generosity of spirit
Governance
CWM's work is directed by the Trustee Body, comprising representatives from all member churches. The Trustee Body is elected by an Assembly of the member churches, which takes place every three years.
CWM encourages equality and full representation of all its members. Each of its 31 member bodies participate at the highest level of decision making. Although overall decisions are made by the trustees, they delegate the task of implementing these decisions to the moderator and deputy moderators - the "officers" of CWM. The officer works closely with an executive staff to carry out the many mission support programmes.
What kind of programmes does CWM run?
- Training in Mission (TIM): a youth leadership training programme for young people exploring their way in mission
Community development workshops: regionally based workshops bringing together people working in community development
Face to Face: a programme exposing students to a context other than their own to stimulate theological reflection
Mission Support programmes: sharing resources with our member churches to enable their mission goals
Scholarships.
