Employers News & Advice

Recruiting and want some advice?

Here is a quick employer checklist to help in your search for the perfect candidate.

Advertising

  • Write / review the job description: make sure it is up-to-date, relevant and covers the key responsibilities.
  • Step back and make sure that the job title is understandable and searchable: i.e. an ‘Account Manager’ can span across numerous industries and sectors, so often a more specific job title can save you time reading a lot of unsuitable applications. Think about reaching quality, not simply quantity.
  • Unsure? Use a salary checker: The internet is more than a useful tool for advertising roles. You can now also find sites that give you a salary guide for job titles, sectors and location.
  • Know your legislation: If in doubt, check it out. If you’re worried that either your advertising or company policies aren’t to current standards, the best route is to contact a recruitment consultancy and get some help and advice. Or, you can also look on websites such as Personnel Today  who have guides and articles on the key employment legislations.
  • Don’t clutter: The job specification is where you put the comprehensive information on the role, not in the advert itself. This is where you promote and sell the job…not bore them with details. As long as you remember – Title/location/salary/brief role detail/ closing date/how to apply - the rest is in how you sell yourselves.
  • Appealing advertising in appropriate media: Good research and design can make or break a campaign. Keep ads well spaced and attractive and pick the best publications/sites – in fact some recruitment advertising agencies such as CJA Recruitment Solutions can research, design, advise AND place adverts on your behalf for no more than the cost of the ad space and a small admin fee. It can often make all the difference.

Response Handling and Interviewing

  • Try not to give too long a closing date as candidates may have been offered a job in the interim ad
  • Think about interview timings in advance
  • Make sure you have the time and capacity to handle the recruitment process. Remember, the way you handle the response to your applications is just as important as the advert itself. Your level of professionalism and efficiency will reflect on you as a company - it is their first impression of you..
  • If you don’t have the time, enlist the help of a professional agency that does. The may charge a small fee but …
  • Respond quickly to applications to say that it has been received and they will be contacted shortly.
